There are a multitude of different opinions about music and worship. Let’s go to the Final Authority Who created music, and let God’s Word determine our opinion, and not our culture. With God’s Word as our filter, lets sift through our own music tastes, and ask ourself, “Do I listen because I like it, or because is brings honor to God?”

1. Spiritual music brings victory over sin 1 Samuel 16:23 “And it came to pass, when the evil spirit from God was upon Saul, that David took an harp, and played with his hand: so Saul was refreshed, and was well, and the evil spirit departed from him.”

2. Carnal music provokes rebellion Exodus 32:17-21 “…There is a voice of war in the camp. And he said, It is not the voice of them that shout for mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome: but the noise of them that sing do I hear.”

3.Worldly music can cause a weaker believer to fall 1 Corinthians 8:9, 13 “But take heed lest by any means this liberty of yours become a stumbling-block to them that are weak…Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend.”

4. New creatures sing new songs2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature, old things are passed away, behold all things are become new.”

Psalm 40:3 “And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God…”

5. Following Christ means stop flirting with the worldJames 4:4 “Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.”

6. Music should be played decently and in order1 Corinthians 14:40 “Let all things be done decently and in order.”

7. The message of music teaches the listenerColossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”

8. The words of Christ should saturate the lyrics of a song – Colossians 3:16 Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs…”

9. Our music should be transformed from culture, not conformed to cultureRomans 12:2 “And be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind…”

10. The attitude and appearance of a performer should always draw attention to Christ and never to self

Jeremiah 9:23-24 “Thus saith the LORD, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches: but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me…”

11. Music was created by God and for God– Colossians 1:16 “…all things were created by Him and for Him.”
