The Office of a Deacon

This is a special time in the life of our church as we select those men who will fill the office of the deacon. Every church member is absolutely vital to the functioning of the local church, and ought to exemplify the spirit of a deacon (the word means “servant”). However, the Bible teaches that the leadership of the local church is made up of two offices: the Pastor and the deacons. It is the responsibility of each church body to select from within their local assembly faithful Spirit-filled men to occupy the deacon’s office (1 Timothy 3:8-13).  Selecting deacons is not about popularity or position. The deacon’s office was designed to help the pastor. By delegating ministry responsibilities to the deacons, the pastor is able to focus on the priorities of prayer, preaching, and people (Acts 6:1-7). When God’s church follows God’s pattern, God’s blessing will be upon that church!
